Overview
The Board of Assessors works with the Assessing Department, overseeing the annual valuation of all real and personal property, hearing and voting on abatements/appeals, occasionally conducting on-site property inspections, and reviewing and granting applicable tax exemptions (Click here for more information on tax relief options).
Members must be prepared for the cyclical nature of assessing. Demands for this role can vary depending upon tasks at hand – such as annual abatement application voting, and revaluation periods occurring every 5 years.
Special Requirements
Members of the Board of Assessors must pass Course 101: Introduction to Assessment Administration hosted by the Department of Labor Services. Experience in real estate is helpful for serving on this Board. Confidentiality is important due to the sensitive nature of some information contained within applications.
