Improving Police Communication in our Community

Acton Town News Posted on August 22, 2025

The Town of Acton is enhancing communication between the Acton Police Department and the community through two important initiatives: the introduction of Pocketalk devices and the continuation of the Blue Envelope program.

Pocketalk devices are portable language translators that will be assigned to officers in patrol cars. These tools will help bridge language gaps during interactions with community members who speak different languages, reducing misunderstandings and fostering clearer communication.

Alongside this new technology, the Blue Envelope program continues to be an important resource for supporting individuals on the autism spectrum. The program provides a visual cue—a blue envelope—and clear guidance for officers on how to communicate effectively with people who may have different communication styles or sensitivities. During traffic stops and other encounters, the envelope signals to officers the need for a more tailored and understanding approach, helping create safer, more positive interactions for all.

Together, Pocketalk devices and the Blue Envelope program demonstrate Acton’s ongoing commitment to breaking down communication barriers, building trust, and fostering stronger relationships between police and residents.
