[ARCHIVED] MassDOT Advisory: Temporary Weekend Lane Closures on Route 2 Eastbound and Westbound

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that it will be implementing temporary weekend lane closures and detours on Route 2, between the Concord Rotary and Wetherbee Street, in Acton and Concord.

MassDOTThe closures will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 23, and is scheduled to continue through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, April 26.  These traffic impacts are necessary to allow crews to install a precast concrete wildlife culvert safely and effectively under Route 2 as part of the ongoing Bruce Freeman Rail Trail Project Phase 2B which is currently under construction. The closures and detours will be as follows:

 Route 2 westbound:

  • Route 2 westbound will be closed between the Concord Rotary and Wetherbee Street.  Traffic will be detoured at the Concord Rotary to Route 2A westbound (Great Road) for 0.9 miles, turn left onto Wetherbee Street in Acton, follow Wetherbee Street 0.3 miles and then turn right onto Route 2 westbound beyond the work area.

 Route 2 eastbound:

  • Route 2 eastbound will be reduced to a single lane.  Traffic will be reduced to a single lane prior to the work area. This single lane of traffic will cross over the median to the closed Route 2 westbound lane, travel past the work area and then cross the median back to the eastbound side.

These traffic impacts are necessary to allow crews to install a precast concrete wildlife culvert safely and effectively under Route 2 as part of the ongoing Bruce Freeman Rail Trail Project Phase 2B currently under construction.  This project includes the construction of 4,675 feet of rail trail along with bridges over Route 2 and Nashoba Brook connecting phases 2A and 2C of the rail trail previously constructed.  The contract was awarded to MIG Corporation with an estimated total cost of $10.6 million.  The project is anticipated to be completed in July 2022.

Drivers who are traveling through the area should reduce speed and use caution. Appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and advanced message boards will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.
